Wolverine Vs Hulk

This started out as a pencil sketch on the subway home one night. I totally forgot about it,but then yesterday I scanned it into the computer and finished it off. I've been doing a lot of pen and ink brush work of late, so I thought these pencils would be perfect to ink over.

The pencils below are the about as tight as I pencil, especially if I'm working digital. Its basically just a frame work. Even when I don't work digitally if I'm inking my own work I have really loose pencils.

Finally I thought it would be fun to take a snapshot of the beginning inks. I ink on a layer over the pencils, and I usually put a layer of white in between the pencils and inks. I'll toggle the opacity on that white layer as I ink. I feel it helps me see my ink clearer as I work depending on what area I'm inking.

Overall I'm glad how it turned out. Wolverine looks psychotic and I love drawing Hulk with kinda 70s hair. More soon.

Gamera!

GAMERA ! I've always considered Gamera a bit of a chump. So I've never actually drawn him. Somewhere along the way though I've grown fonder of the turtle. In a genre ( giant monsters ) full of weirdness he sticks out like sore thumb. Total rip off, yet somehow original? Is that even possible? Whatever the answer I do like him now. His movies are bad but the concept of giant turtle that can fly like a UFO and shoot fire is cool.

I think I'll keep going with these monster. Maybe once I get 25 or so together I'll print up an art book of them?

Diabolik

One of my favorite character is the classic anti hero Diabolik featured in Italian comics. He's a master thief who is helped by his partner/lover Eva Kant. Its just a really cool comic. The movie Danger: Diabolik by Mario Bava is equally awesome. For extra awesome it has a Ennio Morricone score. Check it all out when you can.

Bonus: heres the thumbnail for the above illustration

Robin 1966

Heres the Robin counterpart of the below Batman piece.

Batman 1966

Continuing the brush work stuff. Heres a version of Batman I draw that's based on the 66 TV show, but with some modern sensibilities. I have this idea for a comic done this way. Using the 1966 designs but in a messy indie art style with a really weird modern sci-fi/horror story. I'll post more designs soon.

MechaGodzilla

Seriously, there are fewer cooler looking monster/robots that the original MechaGodzilla.

With a lot of these illustrations, I'm trying to be looser then I tend to be. I'm really letting the brush and ink do a lot of the drawing. Not trying to control things so much. I think its giving these drawings a nice sense of energy.

Godzilla

Here's another sketchbook piece. Godzilla, King of the Monsters.

Planet of The Apes

I'm putting together a DIY sketchbook. So I'm trying to do some spec illustrations for it. Along the way I'm trying to get a bit looser when inking with a brush. Used some white paint on this as well to give some highlights. All in all took about 30 mins.

Batman comic book pages circa 1989

These we're done when I was 11. I remember thinking I drew the Batmobile really well. Also what's up with the Jokers hair? ANYWAY. I'm glad I saved all this nonsense.

Batman 1988

Was doing some digging, and found a bunch of old drawings from when I was a kid. Heres the first one I scanned up. Its dated 1988 ( I was 10 ), and feature Batman fighting the KGBeast. I wouldn't be surprised if that story line had just come out when I drew this. Those Mike Zeck covers were and continue to be bad ass.

Devil Dinosaur

Did this last year, but thought I would share now. I still have to get that hardcover DD collection that came out. Its such a weird awesome comic. Kirby at his weirdest.

Inhumans

Thought it would be fun to do my favorite Marvel characters as a warm up. I don't usually do a lot of brush inking, but its something I love to play around with. There are a few weird momenst going on, but overall I like it.

I actually took a moment to scan in the pencils prior to inking. Thought it would be a nice look at how loose my pencils can be sometimes.

Batman Sketch

Heres another sketch book sketch. I tend to draw this guy constantly. I thought this littlesketch looked pretty cool. Again this is a fragment of a 11x 14 sketchbook. Probably took half the page. Around 10 minutes of so.

Joker

Been tweaking my Joker. Been incorporating more Cesar Romero into it. I think he's a perfect blend of weird and creepy, while still being the Joker.

Black Lightening ?

Kind've a Dolemite version of Black Lightening. I added in a big bad, Tobias Whale...only because well...he's so weird and random. I think it helps the overall design of the piece. This is the type of illustration I do over a few days as an expanded warm up. It helps me flex my drawing, inking, coloring and design muscles. Plus it ends up being a cool portfolio piece.

Sketchbook page

I thought I would post a two page spread from my current sketchbook . I only use 11 x 14, 400 Series Strathmore Premium Recycled. I must have about 20 + books now. I usually fill up a whole book in 6 months ? At one point I would try to make very polished pages. I treated the books far too precious. But nowadays They are almost exclusively like this. Just total madness. Filled with tons of sketches and ideas. When Im drawing in it, I'll constantly rotate the book so the sketches are in every direction. I'll try to post more of these as time goes on. Maybe give of sell some of these pages if anyone is interested ?

Snow

Cool 3 day sequence of photos my girlfriend took off her deck.

2.0

First post with my newly minted art blog. I did this a while ago, but it fell apart while I focused on paying work other projects and basically lost interest. But with winning the Jan 2010 Zuda competition, I thought It would be a good time to start another art blog up. So I'll be updating this as I can with art and sketches etc. If you want to follow me at http://www.twitter.com/matthewpetz that would be good. when I through something up here I'll be tweeting about it. I think thats it for now. Look forward to art.
